History:

Family owned and operated since we opened our doors forty years ago, Viva Zapata is one of the most popular restaurant and bars in downtown New Haven. Whether you are feasting on our sizzling fajitas in the full service dining room, or snacking on our famous nachos in the barrel lit bar while playing your favorite tunes on our jukebox, you are guaranteed to have a good time. There is ample street parking available, and we are within a few blocks of Yale University, Yale New Haven Hospital, Gateway Community College, and the New Haven Green.

We have a bar area, two dining areas, and a large Banquet Room that is ideal for 20 to 45 guests for reunions, birthday parties, and other celebrations. The interior architecture of the restaurant was built from the beams of a two hundred year old barn, and the tables are repurposed railroad wire spools. You will find plenty to look at throughout the restaurant, including our own library full of timeworn books, as well as many antiques dating to agrarian Mexico, including farming implements, a gold sluice, and wood burning stoves.

The name Viva Zapata originates from Mexico’s prolific history. Emiliano Zapata was a revolutionary and a strong and inspiring leader who helped to overthrow the oppressive forces of the dictator President Diaz. Zapata was renowned for championing the plight of the peasants and fighting injustice, famously stating “I would rather die on my feet, than live on my knees”. Even after his death in 1919, the cry of "Viva Zapata" (Long live Zapata) continued to inspire the oppressed to fight for their life and liberty.
